This car crash story is a product of reckless teenage driving. The crash could have been much worse, but thankfully the circumstances did not allow it.

When I was still in college, I used to carpool with a good friend of mine. We grew up together, our houses are really near each other, and we even got into the same university. It was just natural that we'd come up with the idea to go to classes together whenever our schedules would jive. The crash day was one of those days that we both had the same class schedules, so that meant I could hitch a ride with him after classes as well.

Now, my friend has a reputation for being a fast driver. He has kind of mellowed down now, but in our college years, he was reckless. Well, it was understandable considering he had just been given permission to take his car out on his own and he'd only been driving for about a year at that time. But he also jumped at every chance he could get to drive faster than the speed limit allows.

My friend's last class for that day was running late so he told me to wait for a bit. My bit of waiting turned to long hours of killing time. It was horribly late at night when my friend finally met up with me. I was tired and sleepy, he was tired and sleepy. That combination did not bode well for my friend's driving because his way of not falling asleep at the wheel is to drive even faster than he normally does.

So there we were, driving at top speeds along the seemingly empty roads. We got back to our home vicinity in record time. Just when we were so close to getting home, this car that looked like it was just parked on the side of the road suddenly decided to make a turn right in front of my friend's speeding car. It was so sudden!

My friend slammed on his brakes that caused his car to fish tail. We missed the back of the other car by inches but there were people standing on the side of the road too. By this time, my friend had no control over his car and we were headed straight for those people. Mercifully, they were alert enough to jump out of the car's way. All my friend could do was concentrate on stopping the car from swerving. It was either we were going to crash into a huge pole, or into a ditch. My friend wisely chose to crash into the ditch.

We were fine, but the car was thrashed. The tires went flat from the extreme braking, there were huge dents and deep scratches from hitting the sides of the road, and even the wheel rims were smashed. We couldn't help but blame the other car for assuming that there would be no oncoming cars at that hour of the night, but that was what we assumed too.

Needless to say, it took a while before I hitched a ride with my friend again.
