In March I was on my way to Ft. Lauderdale to look up (and probably purchase) this cherry red, five speed 993 Twin Turbo Porsche. My dream car since I've been able to afford it!

This particular one was slightly used with only 15,000 miles on it, but it was pristine in body and interior. I was overcome with glee when I found what could easily become a show car!

I took this time to make a few days vacation as I waited for the wire transfer to clear. I got to know the previous owner pretty well during this time. He let me know he just put on some fresh new tires and I made myself purchase a one way ticket so I had no choice but to drive this bad boy back home to Philadelphia.

I was looking over the forecast for the week and there were rumblings of a big storm front. I don't want to drive my new baby in the rain so I take an alternate route, deciding to go around Maryland, avoiding Delaware. I may get into Pennsylvania a little further than my destination, but no rain! That was a big plus.

Roughly one hundred miles out of Lauderdale one of these cell phone chatty people with his blonde pinup girlfriend decided to pull up alongside in some new Z28 number and proceeded to taunt me. My brother was along for the joy ride back home and told me, "Mark - you've been riding this thing for one hundred miles. It's time to open this mother up" as he smirked.

I took it up to sixth barreling the highway up to eighty-five miles per hour and at a bout a third mile I had put thirteen car lengths between my Porsche and that Camaro! I was watching the road and watching the mirror and finally decided to step it down.

Finally I backed out of it and my brother-in-law turned to me and asked if I even knew how fast I was going. I didn't know. I stopped looking at 130. He laughed as he informed me that I had the puppy up to over 170! A short time later after I was well backed off the Camaro, at a reasonable speed, passed us with a very straight-faced driver.

Once back home in Philadelphia I drove the car for another two weeks before getting into my accident. What had happened was that while driving home I wore the tires that I knew nothing about out. But who in the world checks tires that are just three weeks old? I don't. Well, didn't. I sure do now.

I was taking my car out for a spin. I admit it, I like to show it off. I drove to the suburbs as I hate city driving and found this great area near a park where I could really let it loose. I'm not sure where the sign was but I apparently missed this thing that was supposed to alert me to falling debris due to work that was being done.

While taking a sharp turn, out of nowhere, a tree from the side of the road came hurtling toward me. I slammed on the brake and jerked the wheel to avoid it. The gravel combined with the tires I had apparently ruined the tread on caused me to lose control and I went speeding over an embankment and into a pole. The velocity of my car caused it to splinter and it subsequently fell on me.

I was in the hospital for two weeks with a fractured leg and wound up with some jewelry in the form of a thirteen inch rod and some screws. I had a matching pair of head lacerations since I used it to smash out my window, purely by accident of course.

A week later I was sitting with the insurance adjuster trying to figure out how to fill out the check when the phone rang. It was someone from Miami asking me if I was still interested in a Speed Yellow 993!

I thought it was a BS call and someone was pulling my leg but it was legit! I took this as a sign that I was meant to own this car! I said sure to her and wanted the information faxed over to me. Just as the adjuster was leaving my house the fax line rang so I took a look.

You can imagine my surprise as I stared down a near identical car to the one I had wrecked not too long ago. Here it was, a sign from on high, to purchase this car! I talked to the previous owner of my last one and he was going to Miami for business and took a look at it. He called me and gave me the green light! Only 6900 miles!

Needless to say I had it shipped.
