Last summer I had my one and only car accident experience. It was a traumatic one and something I would never want to go through again. I spent a total of 2 months in the hospital recuperating from broken bones and bruises to my body.

I hope my sad experience will serve as a lesson to all drivers of automobiles out there, especially those who have the tendency to drink and drive.

As far as I can remember I took a few bottles of beer with my friends because I just broke up with my girlfriend of 3 years and I was a bit depressed. I thought I could handle driving home that night.

The first 30 minutes went smoothly but somehow the alcohol started to take its toll on me and I was kind of losing control over my actions and my alertness was starting to diminish, yet I still went on because I really wanted to retire for the night and sleep in my bed.

It proved to be almost my undoing as I lost control of the wheel and my car skidded on the freeway hitting a parked truck on the opposite side. The last thing I remember was trying to get out of the car with blood oozing down my head and shattered glasses all over my body.

I remember trying to get out but somehow my legs were crushed and stuck and I could hardly move. Good thing I was wearing a seatbelt that most people say is the reason that saved my life. A few minutes later I could hear a few people surround the car and try to lift me out of my car, someone called 911 just to be sure that I be taken care of safely.

The next thing I remember was lying on a hospital bed with metal plates all over my legs and right knee cap. It seems like I broke my leg and needed surgery. Doctors found a high level of alcohol on my bloodstream that suffering an accident is not enough I was found to be responsible for the damage that I brought upon on the truck.

Fortunately for me there were no other people who got hurt in my moment of sheer irresponsibility. Right now I can move my legs freely with just a little pain but the lessons that I've learned during my accident remain still in my mind.

I did a lot of therapy on my legs and some examinations on my head to check for concussions and other possible damages the impact might have caused. Fortunately for me no serious health defects were found. I am still lucky after all.

After my recuperation period I now have to serve community service to pay for the wrongdoings that I have done by driving while under the influence of alcohol. Right now I just try to spread the word about the dangers of drinking and driving hoping that young and old people alike will find more safety in the roads while driving.
