My friend Shane and I were driving on Rout 903 in Tamaqua when this motorcycle came hurtling toward us in our lane. It hit us head on throwing the drive into the road and we wound up swerving onto a steep hill aside of the road that nearly sent us onto the hood.
Just the week earlier another accident occurred on this road where that person was killed. That was a pick-up pulling out of a side street right into the side of another pick-up crushing that driver.
The motorcyclist was not wearing his helmet at the time of the accident and the black top road is not forgiving to the human body, especially the skull. From what anyone can tell there is no reason why this guy was driving in our lane. He wasn't drunk and he had no drugs in his system legal or otherwise. It's one of those mysteries you see features of all over the television set these days.
It's been said that the man had been depressed over his divorce. If that was the cause of his demise I don't care to speculate. I'm hoping not though as that would show complete disregard for everyone else.
I was shocked to my foundation as I sat there. Shane was no different and undoubtedly took it harder than me since he was driving. He stared into space awhile but once he regained his composure he let himself out of the truck's cabin and approached the man in the road.
He checked his pulse and loosened his clothing a bit, tried mouth to mouth but to no success. There was no helping him unfortunately There were way too many traumatic injuries to his body and especially his head. Shane and I were relatively unharmed but wound up in the hospital anyway to make sure everything was where it should be.
I guess there was some question as to what happened and as a result the police shut down the road for several hours taking pictures, drawing diagrams and making maps of anything that could be useful. They reconstructed the accident to a "T" to determine just what happened. To our credit they found that we were telling the truth of what happened and were completely absolved of any wrong doing.
There have been a lot of steps taken to make 903 safer, but clearly there's some more that needs to be done just that the township is too lazy to do what needs to be done. Like lights, more stop signs, slower maximum speed limit and the like would greatly improve the situation.
Route 903 is especially dangerous because the long straight-aways tend to encourage speeding and drivers often are surprised when another motorist pulls out of a driveway or side road. You're coming up on them faster than you think and that translates into people being hurt in a hurry.
There is a task force now to analyze the road. More tax money that could be used to improve it instead of studying it.
