My friend Jamie is a quiet, bookish type of girl but behind the wheel, she transforms into this racing speed demon. As far as I can remember, she has never been in any major accident. She's had a few scrapes here and there but they were all just little scratches and dents. They were nothing that couldn't be fixed in 2 days or less.
Even so, I never really enjoyed being the passenger when Jamie's the driver and for obvious reasons. Riding with her is should I say, an intense experience. On that day that I had to get into her car, we must have had an angel watching over us. Maybe God assigned a special angel for Jamie because I don't know how she still maintains her no major accident record with the way that she drives.
Jamie and I live close to each other so I get a ride home with her sometimes. That day, Jamie decided to take the longer path through the mountains because our regular route was blocked with bumper to bumper traffic. That mountain route may be a lot farther, but we'd most likely be spending the same amount of time sitting in the car waiting for the traffic to move as we would be driving through the mountains.
The road going through the mountains is winding and quite zigzagged. Apart from that, some bends in the road are situated very close to the cliff edges. Trucks and other wide vehicles are also regular users of the mountain route because their heavy weight restricts them from using the main thoroughfares.
Jamie was being her usual self, driving ever so speedily and overtaking slow cars like there was no tomorrow. The zigzagged road had of course a lot of blind curves so I had no idea how she was managing to overtake that many cars. I could see that Jamie was enjoying her drive immensely and she assured me that her every move was calculated. But at one turn, Jamie miscalculated.
A slow-moving SUV was in front of us so Jamie positioned the car onto the other lane to overtake. Suddenly, a truck appeared out of the blind curve and we were stuck in a very dangerous situation.
Instead of slowing down, Jamie sped up the car and she was able to squeeze into the tiny distance in between the truck and the SUV. We thought we were in the clear but we saw that we squeezed ourselves right in front of a very sharp left turn with very little distance to slow down.
Jamie slammed on the brakes. The car's front-wheel brake system caused the rear end of the car to swerve. The rear end of the car took the lead and the car did a 360 turn. I think I even felt the car's two tires lift off from the ground. It was a good thing that Jamie was turning left very hard because otherwise, I think we would've overturned.
The car came to a stop inches from the face of the mountain. I don't know why, but we just started screaming. Then we breathed a sigh of relief. We went home and I don't think either of us has told anyone else what had happened to us that day.
