A story that isn't quite a ‘crash', although I did technically crash into something... On a recent trip to Australia I hired a car to go to Bondi Beach near Sydney. We had parked in one of those multi-storey car parks and when we returned to the car, driving out of the car park, I reverse crashed into one of the many hundreds of pillars that support the different levels.
It turned out that we had to return the car to another multi-story car park in Sydney but when we got to the place there was a space right up against a wall and I managed to park so close to the wall that it was impossible to get to, or see, the smashed corner of the car where I'd hit the pillar.
The guy from the hire company came with a clipboard and walked around the car, ticking off boxes all the while, and could not see the smashed corner in the shadows so signed the car off as returned in good condition.
Anyway we went to get out flight and I felt relieved on the way home that I'd got away it, I didn't have to pay a multi-thousand dollar repair bill for the hire car.
It's since occurred to me that the guy who signed the car off as OK may have got into trouble so I would like to apologise now if this is the case and this story sounds familiar to you... or maybe the next person who hired the car got the blame for it, or random hooligans in the car park?
