I was driving along a freeway off-ramp outside NYC at high speed, about 70mph, when the car in front suddenly slammed his breaks on and stopped dead, real fast, right in the middle of the busy traffic. I was lucky to swerve and miss him and noticed as I drove passed that he hadn't slammed his breaks on at all but his left front wheel looked like a dislocated or broken arm, all unnaturally twisted at the wrong angle. His front axel or suspension must have snapped and the tire, at a right angle from where it should be, acted as a highly efficient brake causing smoke to billow out as he stopped.

I felt a bit sorry for the guy actually, stuck in the middle of traffic with absolutely no way of moving his car. I was lucky not to crash into him, I hope no one else did either.
